Back To Training With A Bang

Big welcome back to all our returning members, athletes, officials and coaches and especially to our new members as we look ahead to an exciting 2022 season.

Also big welcome to our three newest coaches, Allie, Sharon and Ed, who will be joining the team for 2022.

General Wednesday training will resume in Donaghmede Park next week and details on that will be provided by Erika as normal next week.

Saturday Training In National Indoor Arena

We have a great experience planned for Saturday 15th January with a full training session in the National Indoor Arena in Abbotstown. This is for all athletes born in 2014 and older. Note, we have a second day planned in Abbotsown on Saturday 29th January and athletes of all ages (so 2015 and 2016) will be able to attend that session.

The 15th January session takes place from 14:00 – 16:00 and will allow athletes to try all events and disciplines, including sprints, middle distance, hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot putt, javelin and relays. More details on this will be provided next week including the specfic Covid related requirements.

Olympic Stars To Be Guest Coaches

While our coaching team is already amazing, as a bonus, we will be having two special coaches for the day to help the athletes with their relay practice. Cillin Greene and Sophie Becker will be on hand to pass on their relay expereince. Cillin and Sophie were part of Team Ireland who competed in the 4 x 400m mixed relay in the Olympics in Tokyo, qualifying for the final and finishing an amazing 8th place. It will be a great opportunity for the athletes to learn from some of the best in business.

Our first Dublin Cross Country League season concluded on Sunday in Tymon Park.

Dublin Athletics League Results

Dublin Athletics confirmed the final league results this morning and there is some very positive and exciting news.

Orlaith O’Grady was the overall winner of the Girls U9 league with an overall score of 90 pts, 3 points ahead of the athlete in 2nd place.

Ella O’Dwyer was 2nd overall in the Girls U11 league, just 2 points off 1st place. Sarah O’Farrell was equal 7th. Both Ella and Sarah close out their cross-country season as part of the Dublin team at the All-Irelands in Gowran on Sunday.

Marianne O’Farrell was equal 3rd in the Girls U13 league. Marianne also competes for Dublin in Sunday’s All-Ireland.

Aaron Rao was a superb equal 7th in the Boys U14 league. This was largely down to his very brave run last Sunday when he went with the leaders and was rewarded with a big points finish.

Top 6 finishers will receive an award from Dublin Athletics over the coming weeks but a Top 10 finish in the Dublin Leagues is a huge achievement for all these athletes.

Committment Medals

All Congriffin athletes who competed in at least three of the Dublin League or Championship races will receive a special cross-country Gold medal. Any athlete who competed in 2 of the races will receive a special Silver medal. The medals will be presented at the Santa Dash in December.

Well done to all the athlete who showed great commitment to training and racing over the past couple of months.

Dublin Indoors 2019

The Championships are open to any athlete born in 2014 or older. In the younger ages, there are less events and the focus is very much introducing competition.

U10 (Born 2013: 60m, 400m, 4 x 200m Relay)

Participation

We encourage athletes to compete and experience competitive athletics but there is no obligation. To help the coaches plan training for coming months, if you could confirm, via the form below, if your athlete wishes to compete, so either:

  • No
  • Not Sure
  • Yes

Form to confirm interest or otherwise is here.

If you are Not Sure and need more information, we can answer any questions.

If you select yes, could you also select which events they would be interested in (you can select more than one). Middle Distance is 300m-800m.

This is just an initial confirmation that athletes are interested and not a formal entry form. Athletes can change their mind as we get closer to the cut-off dates in early February.

Preparation

For athletes wishing to compete, we will prepare them for competition in the months leading up to the championship at the General Training session on Wednesday. Athletes who are doing events that are more technical such as Hurdles, Long Jump, High Jump or Shot Putt will have an additional preparation session each Friday in Morton Stadium.

In addition, we have two special days in the National Indoor Arena for our own Clongriffin Winter Olympics in January. This will give athletes the opportunity to train and try events in the Arena before the Dublin Championships. Dates for these are 15th and 29th January, 14:00-16:00 both days.

Relays

We will look to field relay teams in as many ages as possible as it is great to be able to race with your club mates and can be a less intimidating prospect. A relay involves four per team, each running 200m. In outdoor competition, this is 100m per team member.

All-Irelands

In ages 2011 and older, the Top 4 finishers in each event will qualify for the All-Ireland Championships, with the exception for middle distance events, which is Top 3 finishers.
