Exciting Opening Weekend Of Dublin Championships

Aaron and Zac with Shot Putt Silver & Bronze

The past weekend saw Days 1 and 2 of the Dublin Championships in Tallaght. First up on Saturday were u9-u11 athletes in their Pairs and Relays championships.

Turbo Powered Boys

A briliant performance by the U10 Turbo Javelin pair of Daniel and Joe saw them take a brilliant gold medal.

Long Jumpers To The Fore

The U9 pair of Emre and Quinn claimed a super silver in the Long Jump while the three pairs in the U10 filled 3rd, 4th and 5th positions with Orlaith and Monika eventually claiming the Bronze.

Sprinter Twins

Mya and Zara got the bronze medal in the U10 60m

Relays

Great excitement at the end of the day with the 4 x 100m across all ages. The Girls u10 had two teams and both team qualified for the final, a brilliant achievement for the 8 girls. In the Final the team of Lucy, Orlaith, Zara and Niamh claimed a dramatic Gold while the team of Mya, Amelia, Sara and Monika were a brilliant 5th.

The Boys u11 also had two teams with the team of Oran, Jacques, Max and Evan making the final and finished a super 6th. The team of Wiktor, Lenny, Sebastien and Joe narrowly missed the qualification for the final while the Boys u10 team of Daniel, Joe, Ruben and Charlie had a superb 7th in their final.

Well done all.

Day 2

Day 2 was the u12 to u17 athletes.

Throws

Aaron and Zac set the tone for what was to be a great day by claiming Silver and Bronze in the u15 Shot Putt.

More throwing medals came in the u12 Shot Putt with Akim winning silver in a very exciting competition that came down to the final 6th round before the medals were settled. Sophie, in her championship debut, made the final (Top 8) of the u12 Shot Putt from a field of 22 athletes. Zac and Sophia both finished with Top 8 placings in their Javelin competitions.

Middle Distance

The 600m and 800m races are always tough with heats and finals on the same day. The work being put in at training by the Middle Distance crew is starting to pay dividends. Keane ran a very composed race in the U13 600m, qualifying for the final and then finishing 8th in the Final. Ella and Sarah controlled their heat to qualify and then in a very competitive final ran smart to be in contention with 100m to go. In a burst for the line, Ella came wide to claim silver while Sarah was just off the leaders in 6th.

Hurdles

Jack made his club debut with a very impressive bronze in the U17 300m hurdles while Kevin was 5th in the u15 250m hurdles. Kevin also claimed a Top 8 spot in the Long Jump.

High Jump

The hard work being put in by the Friday High Jump Crew was evidenced with super jumping by Anabel, Liliya and Marianne.

Anabel was =5th in the u13 while Liliya was 4th in the u12 (qualifiying her for the All-Irelands).

The day was ended with a gripping u14 high jump with multiple Dublin medalists and All-Ireland medalists competing. Marianne had a day of days in the evening sun, jumping a big 8cm PB and grabbing a silver medal.

All-Ireland Qualifiers

All medalists (and 4th placers in U12-U17 events) now qualify for the All-Irelands to be held in Tullamore in July.

Dublin Outdoor Championships

The Dublin Outdoor Championships will be starting at the end of May. These are for athletes U9 (Born 2014) and older.

U9 to U11

For ages U9-U11 it is a Pairs Competition, so the athletes compete as a Team of 2 instead as individuals. For this age, athletes can compete in two events plus a relay. Events are 60m, Middle Distance (300-600m), Long Jump, Shot Putt and 4 x 100m Relay.

This championship is confirmed for 28-May.

U12-U17

For ages U12-U17, it is an individual competition and athletes compete in the event as individuals. However, there is a relay for each age group and this is a team of 4. Athletes may compete in three events plus a relay. The specific timetable for these ages is not yet confirmed but the dates are 29-May, 10-Jun, 11-Jun, 12-Jun, 15-Jun, 17-Jun. Once specific timetables are available, they will be shared.

Events are Sprints, Hurdles (u13+), Long Jump, High Jump, Javelin, Shot Putt, Discus (u14+), Javelin (U14+) and 4 x 100m relay.

Please complete the form here to confirm interest in competing.

Relays Night – Santry – Friday 13th May

A date for the diary, this is special training as part of preparation for relay team for the Dublin Championships. We will look to enter relay teams in all ages from U9 (2014) up. If we have enough athletes we will enter more than one team in an age group to ensure everyone can have the opportunity to compete in a relay. Each relay team has four members and it is 4 x 100m (indoors was 4 x 200m).

The Dublin Relays for U9-U11 are confirmed for 28th May while the other ages are still to be confirmed.

Picking Relay Teams

The Coaching Team will consider many factors when selecting teams for relays but at all times Long Term Athlete Development will be the priority. Factors include:

  • Committment to and focus at training particularly relay training
  • Current ability over the competition distance
  • Readiness to compete

Trial Races

To help the Coaching Team in their team selection and preparation there will be two trial races (over 100m) at training in Santry on May 13th. Training session is 18:30 to 19:30.

If your child would like to be included in relay teams but can’t make this training session, please let the Coaching Team know.
